Job Description

Youngblood Excavating is looking for an experienced Directional Drill Operator for Heavy Civil Construction. Their core business offerings consist of civil/commercial/site development, industrial concrete, bridge construction, utility contracting, and demolition services. Pay will be based on experience. 

 

POSITION SUMMARY

The Directional Drill Operator is responsible for all duties associated with and related to the safe, efficient, and cost- effective operation of Directional Drills and various construction related equipment. This position also performs tasks involving physical labor and heavy equipment operations.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

· Responsible for operating directional drilling equipment for underground wet utilities, including water and sewer.

· Must be able to calculate penetration angle and depth for your elevation and grade given existing utility depths, improved surfaces and rod deflection allowed (bore profile)

· Adhere to all manufacturer provided safety operational procedures and industry safety standards.

· Follow all pre-job requirements including but not limited to, taking pictures, taking videos, paint marking the ground, locate existing utilities via vac truck, and/or hand/manual methods, speaking with 811 USIC personnel, etc.

· Plan ahead and complete items in accordance with typical scope of work demands.

· Perform job site analysis (JSA) including completion of any required documentation.

· Assess current drill path conditions for safe and clear operation and monitor for changes.

· Operate the drill and provide training and assistance to coworkers.

· Inspect and prepare construction sites to eliminate hazards.

· Ensure there are proper clearances per standards.

· Record the depth of the tool head as required and maintain bore log.

· Complete routine inspections on bore equipment.

· Service and maintain equipment.

· Frequently use a variety of hand and power tools.

· Operate heavy equipment as needed, including but not limited to the following: excavator, skid steer, loader, and dozer.

· Properly clean and maintain the equipment, check fluid levels, and conduct a visual inspection of vehicle/equipment to assure your vehicle/equipment is performing at optimum safety, perform the required pre-trip, post trip inspections and the required reports, perform needed maintenance including winterizing equipment.

· Ability to solve problems quickly and effectively with little to no supervision.

· Frequently communicate with Supervisor, reporting any issues and concerns, and submitting required paperwork weekly (e.g., Bore log, vehicle maintenance reports, crew time logs etc.)

· Maintain confidentiality about company matters such as price and cost schedules, company finances or any information about company to competitors and clients.

· Occasionally trains and supervises pipe crew members during drill operations, as requested by Management.

· Perform other related duties as required or requested by Management.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

· High School Diploma or equivalent.

· 5+ years of experience with directional drilling.

· Must possess knowledge of trench safety for sloping, benching, and trench boxes

· Possess knowledge of drilling fluids, tooling, drilling processes (trade specific).

· Knowledgeable with applicable state and local 811 standards, procedures, and requirements.

· Prior experience with drilling practices in various soil conditions.

· Familiarity with traffic control or MUTCD standards.

· Capable of reading and interpreting construction blueprints.

· Must be able to dig and pothole as necessary.

· Ability to prioritize and complete assignments accurately and in a timely manner.

· Able to effectively handle multiple priorities with a strong attention to detail in a fast-paced environment.

· Intermediate Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) skills preferred.

· Superior interpersonal, organizational, oral, and written communications skills.

· Must be able to work alone, and with a team.

· Must be able to work nights and weekends, as needed, to meet client needs.

· Ability to operate a commercial vehicle and/or pulling a trailer.

· Bilingual (English/Spanish) heavily favored.

 

REQUIRED LICENSES & OTHER MISCELLANEOUS NECESSITIES

· Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to/from the office and the job site(s).

· Class A CDL driver’s license strongly favored.

· Available to work on Saturday and/or Sunday if project deadlines require weekend work, which is a rarity.

· Able to pass a pre-employment drug screen and a thorough criminal background check.

· Prior or current Competent Person certification.

· Capable of carrying, setting up, and extending heavy ladders.

· Ability to effectively communicate with employees, management, customers, etc.

· Must be able to work in various temperatures and weather conditions (e.g., hot, cold, wet, dry,).

· Able to work in a loud, noise-filled, environment out in the field.
